2. Don’t react: This one is super hard! Keep in mind babies are learning about cause and effect. If you give a big reaction, it may encourage them to keep the behavior going. The calmer you are, the more likely they are to realize that they won’t get the reaction they are wanting from you.⁣⁣⁠⁣

3.Reduce the portion sizes significantly! This can help reduce waste and make the throwing less appealing.

4.Explain your expectations: Babies won’t know what behavior you want from them, if you don’t express your expectations clearly, calmly and consistently. Using physical tools and hand motions helps! For example: putting a colored piece of tape on the table you can point to it and say “plate goes here.” Pointing to the plate you can say “Food goes here.” Repetition and consistency is important!⁣⁣⁠ ⁣

Even though your baby is young, they understand more than you know!⁣

5.If this keeps going on, they may be done eating! It’s okay to end the meal.⁠⁣

In the past, parents were advised to delay the introduction of certain allergenic foods to their babies; however, after further research, the recommendations and guidelines on this matter have been updated.⁠

We now have some newer research that early exposure (and frequent) to these top allergens may be protective and reduce the risk for allergies as kids grow. The strongest research shows there’s evidence for this especially with peanut and egg. Overall, the newer recommendations also include early exposure to other allergens as well (LEAP study)🤗⁠.⁠

🥜 Some of the most common foods that are likely to trigger an allergic reaction according to the World Health Organization (WHO) and Food Allergy Research & Education include:⁠

- Fish (finned fish)⁠
- Milk and dairy products⁠

- Soy ⁠

🥜Some tips for allergen exposure:⁠

- Offer early in the day around 6 months and don’t put baby down for a nap immediately after so you can watch for a reaction.
- Space out the allergens. For example do not offer peanut and egg on the same day, otherwise if there is a reaction you may not know which food it is coming from.⁠
- If your baby has severe eczema or other diagnosed autoimmune conditions or your family is high risk for developing food allergies, make a plan with allergy introduction with your pediatrician or allergist.
- Communicate with your pediatrician and record any reactions (photos/videos) as needed. ⁠

🍓 Strawberries are among the most beloved fruits, especially by babies. They are delicious! 🤤

🍓They are also a source of fiber, B vitamins, vitamin C, magnesium, potassium, and antioxidants. They help with constipation and improve iron absorption 💪🏾

🍓And how can you offer them?

➡️6 months + ⁠

Choose ripe strawberries, wash them well, and offer them whole if they are large.

▫️Cut in half or into quarters.

▫️In thin slices, although it may be harder for the baby to pick them up at the beginning.

🥄 If you don’t want to start with solid foods, you can offer them mashed or crushed with a spoon.

▪Hamburger patties can be offered whole or cut into bite-size pieces to encourage pincer grasp practice.

⁠Choose a high chair that:⁠

🔸️Has a footrest and a section between baby’s legs for added stability, this way baby won’t slide forward and can rest their feet (making them more comfortable and should consequently keep them at the table longer).⁠ If you don’t have a foot rest you can use a pool noodle, exercise band or another wooden addition (usually found on amazon).

🔸️Has a back rest that is not leaning back

🔸️Promotes good posture, about a 90 degree angle at joints (hips, knees and ankles). This reduces choking hazard (babies should not be inclined when they eat) and adds comfort.⁠

⁠Other considerations:

One that is easy to wipe down. That is, has few cloth parts or corners and pockets for food to get stuck in. The high chair pictured is almost completely plastic with a removable double tray (kind of like a big plate) so you can clean most of it in just one swipe.⁠

Ideally has a removable tray and adjustable seat. This is helpful for you to sit baby at the table with the rest of the family and join in on mealtimes.⁠

Disclaimer: Sometimes a child may not be able to achieve 90-90-90 positioning for various reasons like a congenital or genetic condition. This does not mean they cannot start solids. ⚠️ To start solids (with purees or finger foods), baby must have good head and trunk control. But this does vary for every little one!

The reason this is commonly recommended is because a baby who is able to sit on their own with minimal or no support (with good head and trunk control) may have a reduced risk of choking. This gives them more stability when picking up food from their tray and bringing it to their mouth. We wouldn’t want a baby who is falling over to have food in their mouth and to go into a position where the food blocks the airway.

How do you know if they are sitting correctly? 🤔

✅ Sit them for a few seconds on the floor to see if they stay straight (always monitoring). If they immediately fall to the side or backwards, they are not quite ready yet.

✅ Put them directly in the high chair. They should sit straight with their head upright. If they lean to the side or forward A LOT, and they are not able to get back to hold a more central, they are not quite ready yet.

But there are other requirements to start solids

It’s common for toddlers and young children start eating less than when they were babies and become a lot more selective.

🥦Babies who used to love chomping on broccoli and ate every kind of fruit may start refusing those foods later on, and it doesn’t mean their parents have done something wrong, it’s just a natural process.

So whilst in the beginning our main focus is to introduce a variety of flavors, textures and nutrients, later on it may be necessary to use different strategies to keep them interested in eating different things.

👧🏻For toddlers we still focus on offering the nutrients they need, however meals can be a lot more successful if we offer one food they love, one food they normally accept and one new or non-preferred food. Keep in mind that their nutrient needs are met over multiple meals.

📍If your little one has an egg allergy, you’re trying to make a recipe vegan, or you’ve run out of eggs, you can utilize these handy options!

🥚Keep an open mind: not every recipe can use an egg substitute and come out perfectly. Egg is used as a way to bind foods together, add some fat, liquid and also aid in other chemical reactions needed to help baking occur properly.⁣⁠ Because of this, when you sub with something else the texture and consistency of your final product may change.

Here are some substitutions for 1 egg in a recipe:⁣⁠

🥚=1/4 cup mashed bananas: Used in brownies, muffins, cakes, and pancakes (you can also try applesauce, sweet potato or pureed pumpkin)⁣⁠

🥚=1/4 cup applesauce: Used in brownies, muffins, cakes, and pancakes (you can also try applesauce, sweet potato or pureed pumpkin)⁣⁠

🥚=1 tablespoon chia seeds + 3 tablespoons water: Let this gel for 5-10 minutes. This works well in muffins, cookies, cakes and more⁣⁠

🥚=1 tablespoon ground flax seeds + 3 tablespoons water: Let this gel for ~5 minutes. This adds a slightly nutty flavor to foods. I use it in fritters, meatballs, muffins, pancakes etc⁣⁠

🥚=3 tablespoons nut butter: This is SO good in brownies and cakes etc.⁣⁠

🥚=1/4 cup of Aquafaba (the liquid from a can of chickpeas); It helps to blend this in a blender for a minute or two. You can use it in savory dishes like meatballs/fritters. You can also use it in baked goods too.

📍If your little one has an egg allergy, you’re trying to make a recipe vegan, or you’ve run out of eggs, you can utilize these handy options!

🥚Keep an open mind: not every recipe can use an egg substitute and come out perfectly. Egg is used as a way to bind foods together, add some fat, liquid and also aid in other chemical reactions needed to help baking occur properly.⁣⁠ Because of this, when you sub with something else the texture and consistency of your final product may change.

Here are some substitutions for 1 egg in a recipe:⁣⁠

🥚=1/4 cup mashed bananas: Used in brownies, muffins, cakes, and pancakes (you can also try applesauce, sweet potato or pureed pumpkin)⁣⁠

👑Luca (17 months) has been having some tough dinners lately. He *often* wants to get out of his high chair and has been wanting to take a few bites of dinner and then run around. Anyone else in this stage?🙋‍♀️.

💡Unfortunately, there are some baby foods that are marketed to parents that contain added sugar, when in reality it may not need to be there. Read ingredient lists to figure out what foods contain added sugars.

When baby takes a big bite…

This is a common fear for parents and it can happen with purees or with finger foods!

Note: In the video both mom and I are monitoring baby, and aware of her eating abilities. We also offered a large soft boiled beet that was an easy texture to mash between your fingers. Big bites happen! Little ones do have to learn how to navigate their personal limits for different foods and textures in their mouth💚.

When this happens with your little one here’s what we recommend:

1. Monitor baby and check to make sure they are comfortable

2. Note where the food is in their mouth. If it is visibly closer to the front and they are still working on it, try to be patient (while you monitor).

3.You can over exaggerate your chewing in front of them so they mimic you

4.You can over exaggerate spitting the food out so they mimic you

Note: If baby ever seems visibly uncomfortable/stressed, stops breathing, or turns grey/blue act immediately to perform the Infant Heimlich ASAP.

To help get over a “big bite fear” if it happens:

- You can hold the food, and hold it closer to the ends so they bite only until they reach your fingers.
- Offer soft foods in stick shapes
- Offer smaller pieces and pace the meal

What we don’t recommend is:

🚨Finger swiping the food out of their mouth

- One of the biggest reasons why it is not recommend is because it potentially can push the food further back into their mouth, and actually cause choking to occur.
- It also doesn’t allow baby to navigate the bites (which is a learning process for them).
- It can also startle the baby and cause them to lose control over the bite and cause choking or an aversion.

Why do babies throw plates instead of eating?

It might seem like mischief, but for little ones, tossing food or dishes from a high chair is a form of learning. Around 8–18 months, babies are developing motor skills, testing cause and effect, and exploring their environment which basically means more mess…

When a plate hits the floor, they notice your reaction, hear the sound, and see the splash. It’s science, sensory play, and social interaction all rolled into one.

While it can be frustrating for caregivers, this behavior is developmentally normal. You can help guide it by offering non-breakable items, using suction plates, and calmly reinforcing mealtime routines.

Limit reactions that turn it into a game, and try to read your child’s cues. Like here, Scarlett was flipping her plate because she was done eating.

Remember, babies don’t throw food to annoy you. They’re curious, playful, and learning through action. Keep meals low-pressure, introduce food in small amounts, and stay consistent.
